The root of the Liquorice plant (Glycyrrhiza glabra), which grows in Southern Europe, has a sweet flavour. In fact the word "Liquorice" comes from the Greek for "Sweet Root". By chewing on the root you can enjoy Liquorice in its most natural form.

This root comes from Calabria in Italy where liquorice root has been harvested since 1499. The characteristics of the soil in the region give the liquorice its distinctive taste.

The Amarelli family have been harvesting liquorice roots in Calabria since the 15th century and started creating pure liquorice sweets in 1731. More than 250 years later, the business is still family-owned!

We sell the roots individually. They can be chewed on or boiled to make tea.
